The Master Sword is a one-handed weapon in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Once restored, this weapon can deal a good amount of damage without breaking. However, after using it for a while, the sword will run low on energy and need some time to recharge.

One of the most recognizable icons of the entire Legend of Zelda franchise, the Master Sword returns for yet another game and has another adventurous way to retrieve/revive it after meeting some, uh, complications in the opening cutscenes.

The Master Sword can be fused with materials like any other weapon. Its appearance and attack value will change accordingly.

Spoiler Warning

Details below reveal how to get the Master Sword.

How to Get the Master Sword

You'll find the Master Swird in TOTK on the Light Dragon's head. The mysterious Light Dragon is a new dragon that appears in the skies when Link first awakens on the Great Sky Island, and will slowly fly around the entirety of Hyrule in a long loop.

Before You Get the Master Sword

There are several things you need to do before you get the Master Sword in TOTK.

  • You're going to need two full stamina wheels in order to pull out the sword from the dragon's head, so you'll need to find at least 20 Light of Blessings from Shrines -- which are traded in to a Goddess Statue to expand your Stamina wheel. See How to Increase your Stamina Wheel for more.
  • You can either complete the main quests,Guidance from Ages PastandFind the Fifth Sage, and then The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom story walkthrough will naturally lead you to recover the Master Sword in the Main Quests Trail of the Master Sword <meta />and Recovering the Hero's Sword.
  • Or you can also get the Master Sword early without doing those quests by collecting all The Dragon's Tears.

The Master Sword Differences in TOTK and Powers

advertisem*nt

Once you've been returned to solid ground, you'll now be able to wield the Master Sword once again. At first glance it may seem similar to how it was in Breath of the Wild, but with some important differences.

While it does not display its damage in your inventory, the Master Sword on its own will deal 30 damage to most enemies, and 60 when it glows in the presence of certain gloom-infused enemies and bosses.

If Link is at full hearts with no damage taken, you can also also hold R to throw sword beams instead of the sword itself.

Of course, just like in Breath of the Wild, the Master Sword can't attack repeatedly forever. It will have its own hidden durability meter -- though much higher than most weapons. When used up, it will have to recharge for a certain amount of time, and be re-fused when it is useable once again. Speaking of fusing... That's perhaps the biggest difference for the Master Sword in TOTK!

How to Fuse Items with the Master Sword

The Master Sword can be fused with materials like any other weapon -- simply hold an item in your inventory or find an item in the wild and stnad in front of it and select Fuse. Hit the button prompt on screen to fuse the Master Sword with the item. The Master Sword's appearance and attack value will change accordingly.

When fused, the Master Sword will retain its original form in the pause screen, but will transform when attacking to show the fused weapon in a green glow.

This also adds increased durability. You can fuse different materials to the Master Sword and remove them as needed, or swap in new parts if the fused part breaks.

When the Master Sword loses its energy, you will lose the fused item.

This is especially helpful to boost Master Sword's power by a great deal. Try fusing Bokoblin or Lizalfo parts to make cool, powerful versions of the Master Sword.

Now that the Legendary Blade with the power to repel Darkness is in your hands once again, and all the Five Sages are ready and accounted for, there is only one task left for you: Defeat Ganondorf. However, you might want to complete your classic Link loadout with the Hylian Shield, a durable and powerful companion to the Master Sword!
