PLAYER RATINGS: Which Premier League defender was best in class? (2024)

France and the Netherlands both booked their places in the last-16 of Euro 2024 after playing out a not-so-thrilling stalemate in Leipzig.

A wasteful French attack - which was making do without the injured Kylian Mbappe - will be left to rue a series of opportunities which would have sewn up winning the group.

The Dutch were determined in their play and thought they had won it themselves when youngster Xavi Simons thrashed in, only for VAR to overrule it following a lengthy check.

N'Golo Kante once again stood out, as did Virgil van Dijk, but there were a number who left a lot to be desired.

Here, Mail Sport's NATHAN SALT runs the rule over the two teams...

Xavi Simons was distraught to see what he thought was the winning goal chalked off by VAR

It was a difficult night for France's attack as Kylian Mbappe watched on from the bench

NETHERLANDS (4-3-3)

Bart Verbruggen - 7.5

Showed his cat-like reflexes to thwart Antoine Griezmann on more than one occasion from close range. Will have been relieved not to have seen Kylian Mbappe get on off the bench but he still had plenty to do and he did it well.

Nathan Ake - 7

Used all his experience to limit Ousmane Dembele's influence on proceedings for that he deserves credit. Not as pro-active going forward but this was always going to be an assignment that scrutinised his defensive abilities more than anything.

Virgil van Dijk - 7

For all of France's dominance - and glaring opportunities squandered - this was a clean sheet for the Dutch orchestrated by their captain. Was very vocal with referee Anthony Taylor following a contentious VAR check to disallow a Dutch goal but was not able to convince the Englishman to give it.

Stefan de Vrij - 6.5

A veteran surrounded by a lot of rising young stars, his experience is invaluable to boss Ronald Koeman. More than played his part in getting this first 0-0 of the tournament over the line.

Denzel Dumfries - 6

Will be kicking himself that his lax positioning when standing offside was the reason the Netherlands' goal through Xavi Simons was chalked off. For an attacking full-back like himself, he didn't offer enough in attacking areas, even when pushed further forward late on.

Tijjani Reijnders - 6.5

Made a crucial headed clearance to stop a near-certain headed goal for Antoine Griezmann in the early exchanges. Like Austria last time out, he was a midfielder that found himself struggling to lay a glove on the likes of N'Golo Kante.

Xavi Simons - 7

Had his headline moment taken away from him following a lengthy VAR check. The youngster's thrashed effort low into the bottom corner was chalked off - but this was a solid display that was much improved on the opening game.

Simons produced a much improved display from the Dutch group opener against Poland

Jerdy Schouten - 6

The PSV midfielder was busy if not super effective once France found their groove to dictate proceedings. Booked.

Cody Gakpo - 6

Has got bags of potential and is able to get bums off seats when he drives at his full-back, but for all that talent he doesn't seem to take games by the scruff of the neck. The Netherlands are crying out for a leader and he should step up and take the mantle.

Memphis Depay - 5

Dominated the headlines back home because of his 'who cares' headlines and he couldn't back it up by doing his talking on the pitch unfortunately. A peripheral figure for the most part as he got swallowed up by William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano.

Jeremie Frimpong - 6.5

Was the first player to sting the gloves of Mike Maignan when he showed a brilliant burst of pace to get in behind before his shot was saved. Faded as the game went on, though.

COACH: Ronald Koeman - 6

No shame in trying to make his side compact and difficult to break down against a team with the quality of France. His side rode their luck at times but were the only one to actually put the ball in the back of the net - albeit disallowed.

Ronald Koeman set his side up not to get beat but he will need more as the Euros progresses

FRANCE (4-3-3)

Mike Maignan - 7

LISTEN NOWEXCLUSIVE EUROS DAILY: Is Kane doing enough for 'chaotically, pathetically bad England?'

Made a fine save in the early stages to tip Jeremy Frimpong's effort just past the post. He won't have loads to do in this tournament given France's quality at the back but he's so reliable when called upon.

Theo Hernandez - 6.5

This was a more restrictive display for the full-back, who looked the best in class with his marauding runs in the opening game against Austria.

William Saliba - 8

Best on show in Leipzig. It becomes more and more curious what Didier Deschamps' is said not to like about his game that has limited his number of caps to this point. Such an accomplished defender, who has carried his brilliant club form into this tournament. MOTM

Dayot Upamecano - 7.5

He is just such a calming presence alongside Saliba and continues to read the game so well. There was one moment which stands out where Upamecano nipped in to win the ball high up and he drove confidently into the midfield. Back to back clean sheets has set the tone.

Dayot Upamecano (left) has played a key role in helping serve up back-to-back clean sheets

Jules Kounde - 6

Didier Deschamps will hope his right back will grow into this tournament after this relatively quiet display. Found himself in an animated conversation at one stage with right winger Ousmane Dembele. Crucial that those two get on the same page.

N'Golo Kante - 7.5

Was man of the match in the opening group stage win over Austria and he has this innate ability of making the game appear like it's in slow motion for him. Plays so effortlessly to help France dominate.

Aurelien Tchouameni - 6.5

Kylian Mbappe's omission meant a reshuffle and it was the Real Madrid man brought into the mix. Helped keep things ticking over but was let down by the finishing of those ahead of him.

Adrien Rabiot - 5.5

Really let France down on the night with his erroneous decision making. Needed to shoot when he passed to Griezmann when through on goal and then got it all wrong with a drilled in cross across the area in the final stages. Must do better.

Marcus Thuram - 5.5

A willing runner but has flattered to deceive in these opening two games. France's attack looked much lighter without Mbappe - not a huge surprise - but hopes that Thuram could step up soon went extinguished.

Antoine Griezmann was left to rue two glaring misses, both from inside the six-yard box

Antoine Griezmann - 6

Had his head in his hands after missing a tap-in 13 minutes in and was left in disbelief in the second half when seeing a strike in the six-yard box saved by Verbruggen. Will have a sleepless night thinking about just how he didn't score.

Ousmane Dembele - 6

Flashed one effort over the bar after cutting inside but saw his attacking contribution restricted by Nathan Ake. Hasn't caught fire in this tournament quite yet but his speed and trickery means he always keeps defenders honest.

COACH: Didier Deschamps - 5.5

It's now seven games without a win for France when Kylian Mbappe doesn't play - and they got away with it here when Simons' goal was chalked off. Will have plenty to unpack in the film session after this one.
