The article discusses the introduction of native VPN apps for Apple TV, with a specific focus on NordVPN's recent app launch. With the release of tvOS 17, Apple TV users can now download VPN apps directly from the App Store, making it easier to circumvent regional restrictions and watch content not available in their country. This development follows Apple's announcement during WWDC that it would allow third-party VPN support on Apple TV, aligning it with other streaming devices like Amazon Fire TV Stick that already support VPNs.Previously, the only methods to use a VPN with Apple TV involved either configuring a VPN-compatible router or setting up a shared internet connection from a VPN-enabled computer, both of which were inconvenient and required technical knowledge. With the new capability, users can simply install a VPN app, such as NordVPN or ExpressVPN, directly on their Apple TV.NordVPN's app, now available for download, requires a current NordVPN subscription. The company promotes the app as a means to protect privacy and overcome internet restrictions, without explicitly mentioning the ability to bypass regional content blocks—a sensitive topic among streaming services. The app allows users to automatically select the best server or choose from servers in 60 countries, promising no compromise on connection speed due to its NordLynx protocol. The article also touches on the benefits of using a VPN, such as avoiding ISP throttling and maintaining privacy. There's a mention of Surfshark, NordVPN's sister company, planning to release its own Apple TV app soon, although no specific timeline is provided.

Apple TV Receives First Big Native VPN App: ExpressVPN is the biggest VPN company so far to take advantage of the VPN support available in tvOS 17. According to The Verge, ExpressVPN will let Apple TV users connect to servers "in any of 105 countries around the world" so they can watch geo-restricted content around the world. From the report: To download it, you'll need to make sure you're on tvOS 17 -- earlier versions don't support native VPN apps at all. Once set up, the app will route your traffic through faraway servers before forwarding them to whatever streaming service or other internet server the Apple TV contacts. ExpressVPN on the Apple TV uses the company's Lightway protocol. Reddit users reported spotting the app last week. Most said they could switch countries to get around region restrictions, though some had issues logging in or getting it to work with specific apps. It's also a basic experience that lacks advanced VPN features like split tunneling, which dynamically applies the VPN connection to certain services as needed, freeing users from managing it manually.Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Express VPN brings privacy and access to Apple TV devicesExpress VPN, one of the most popular virtual private network (VPN) services, has released an official app for the latest Apple TV operating system. The new app arrives alongside the launch of tvOS 17 and marks the first time Apple has allowed third-party VPN apps on its set-top streaming platform.A VPN redirects a device’s internet traffic through remote servers, hiding a user’s real IP address. This allows Apple TV owners to bypass geographic restrictions and access streaming content available in other countries. Before tvOS 17, Apple TV users had to set up VPN connections at the router level, affecting all network devices. The Express VPN app only tunnels Apple TV traffic, leaving other devices unaffected.https://lnkd.in/diirPPjx

New UK-based research from Deloitte estimates that 35% of people with access to a subscription-video-on-demand (SVOD) service are sharing at least one of their subscriptions with other households. Worryingly for platforms seeking to crack down on this situation, more than half (57%) of respondents who share a paid SVOD service say they would stop using the service if subscription sharing was banned.Source: Digital TV Europe
