Is CBS's New Comedy, DMV, a Hit or a Miss?
CBS's latest sitcom, DMV, has just hit the airwaves, and the initial reviews are in. But are they good news? The show, featuring a cast including Harriet Dyer and Tim Meadows, has debuted with a disappointing 54% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This score places it firmly in 'Rotten' territory, as the website requires a 60% score to be considered 'Fresh'.
This workplace comedy, set in an East Hollywood Department of Motor Vehicles, premiered on October 13th, and stars employees navigating the daily chaos of the DMV.
But here's where it gets interesting... Despite its less-than-stellar critical reception, DMV actually pulled in 3.93 million viewers for its premiere, outperforming its lead-in, The Neighborhood, which drew 3.85 million viewers.
However, the show didn't make it to the top 10 on Paramount+'s streaming chart. It briefly appeared at number 8 on the Paramount+ (Amazon Channels) chart on October 15, but quickly dropped off.
CBS, seemingly confident in the show's potential, gave DMV a full-season order of 20 episodes, after initially ordering 13. The network also airs other comedies such as Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, Ghosts, and The Neighborhood.
And this is the part most people miss... The show's success could hinge on its ability to attract and retain viewers in the coming weeks. The series premiere suggests a potential audience, but the critical reception raises questions about its long-term viability. The series airs Mondays at 8:30 p.m. EDT on CBS.
Controversy Alert: Given the mixed reviews, do you think DMV has what it takes to become a long-running hit? Or will it fade away like some other workplace comedies? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
