DLC-Sized Baldur's Gate 3 Mod Adds And Entire New Rogulike Game Mode (2024)

Baldur's Gate 3 players itching for some kind of new experience in the Forgotten Realms should definitely check out this mod which manages to transform the RPG into an action-packed roguelike. While Larian Studios' sprawling Dungeons & Dragons game may not initially appear to function like a randomly-generated roguelike, it certainly has the variety needed to make the genre truly sing. With hundreds of different locations, items, and enemies, it stands to reason that all of these factors could be swirling together to create an experience that rewards flexibility and careful strategy.

Over on Nexus Mods, creator Hippo0o shared their excellent "Trials of Tav" mod which overhauls Baldur's Gate 3 by adding in a standalone roguelike game mode. Accessible through the menu, the system will balance itself according to the party's level as players can explore and battle their way across 38 maps and 250+ enemies. Each round will reward new loot and abilities that can be unlocked for future runs, meaning players are incentivized to play as much as possible to increase their pool of resources and ensure they always have something viable for the next challenging encounter.

Difficult To Implement, A Dream To Play

While the opportunity to hone in on Baldur's Gate 3's excellent combat may already be enough to bring players back for the roguelike mod, the sheer complexity and depth of the add-on is what will keep users around. Booting up from a new save to ensure any campaign progress isn't interrupted, Hippo0o recommends that Honor Mode be used for runs to ensure an authentic permadeath experience. Additionally, the mod also works with multiplayer because dying horribly with friends is all the more fun.

With such an expansive add-on, one has to wonder if "Trials of Tav" eventually makes its way into the official Mod Support directory. Larian Studios has confirmed that the functionality is in development and will arrive with Patch 7 which is currently slated to drop in September. Given the popularity of the roguelike genre, it stands to reason that plenty of players will pick up this mod, so perhaps the developer will show it some additional love.

Baldur's Gate 3 may have one of the most massive narratives yet penned for a video game but "Trials of Tav" is perfect for all those players who just want to enjoy a decent replica of Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition. Featuring a modified version of the official ruleset, combat is both driven by knowledge of one's characters and luck, resulting in exhilarating victories and heartbreaking defeats. One can only hope this excellent roguelike experience recieves more updates along with the popularity it deserves.
