Botulism Outbreak: Baby Formula Recall in Multiple States (2025)

A shocking discovery has been made, and it's sending ripples through the baby formula industry. The germ that causes botulism, a potentially deadly toxin, has been found in baby formula sold across multiple states, including New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Preliminary tests conducted by California health officials revealed that ByHeart baby formula contained the bacteria responsible for producing this dangerous toxin. As of Sunday, at least 13 infants across 10 states have fallen ill, with no reported deaths. The California Department of Public Health has issued a stern warning, urging consumers to immediately stop using the affected product.

But here's where it gets controversial... While ByHeart has recalled two lots of its Whole Nutrition Infant Formula, pending further tests, the company maintains that more testing is needed to confirm the presence of botulism-causing bacteria. They argue that this type of bacteria is part of a large family, many of which are harmless and naturally occurring.

Infant botulism is a rare condition, typically affecting fewer than 200 babies in the U.S. annually. It's caused by a specific type of bacteria that produces toxins in the large intestine. Infants under one year old are particularly vulnerable, and exposure to spores in dust, dirt, water, or even contaminated honey can lead to serious illness, including paralysis.

Symptoms can take weeks to develop and may include poor feeding, loss of head control, droopy eyelids, and a flat facial expression. Babies may feel weak and have difficulty swallowing or breathing.

The treatment for infant botulism is a medication called BabyBIG, an IV drug made from the blood plasma of adults immunized against botulism. This medication helps shorten hospital stays and reduce the severity of the illness. However, due to the potential impact on breathing, infants often require ventilators.

All children affected by the ByHeart outbreak have received this medication, according to the CDC.

Despite this outbreak, there's no danger of infant formula shortages. ByHeart, founded in 2016, accounts for only an estimated 1% of national formula sales. This is a stark contrast to the crisis in 2022 when Abbott's formula was linked to infant deaths and illnesses, leading to massive shortages across the U.S.

In response to these incidents, federal health officials have vowed to overhaul the U.S. food supply and are taking a closer look at infant formula. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has directed the FDA to review the nutrients and ingredients in infant formula, a process dubbed "Operation Stork Speed." This is the first comprehensive review of infant formula ingredients since 1998.

The FDA is currently reviewing comments from industry experts and the public to determine the next steps in ensuring the safety of our nation's babies.
