If you’re looking for an easy and delicious recipe to make for St. Patrick’s Day, look no further than these beef and Guinness hand pies! These savoury little pies are perfect for a party or as a quick and tasty dinner. Best of all, they’re really simple to make – just follow our step-by-step instructions below.

Beef and Stout pies are a favourite traditional recipe from the UK. Typically it is made with good cuts of beef, stout, mushrooms and all sorts of good stuff. I’ve modified the recipe to simplify it and make it accessible no matter your budget and of course kids love eating with their hands so even the pickiest eaters will enjoy this one!

I chose to use Guinness because it has such a distinctive flavour that I think works really well, plus its a fab nod towards St. Patrick’s Day and making it a little bit more of a specifically Irish recipe.

These would be great to serve up at any St. Patrick’s Day themed dinner parties! Not only are they delicious but they are pretty cute and easy to eat with just a napkin making them perfect party food.

Who doesn’t love a hand pie? They’re portable, tasty, and perfect for a quick snack or an easy meal. This beef and Guinness hand pies recipe is sure to become a family favourite!

How to Make Ahead and Store Hand Pies

You can make these pies ahead of time and then freeze until ready to serve.

Assemble the hand pies completely, but do not bake them. Place in a single layer on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat and freeze for at least two hours to ensure they are fully frozen before transferring to freezer bags. It will take about 2-3 hours in the refrigerator for the pies to thaw.

When you are ready to bake the pies, follow the baking instructions until golden brown and heated through.

To store any left over baked pies, cool them completely before placing in an airtight container. I recommend storing the pies in the refrigerator if you are not eating them immediately. They will keep in the fridge for up to 5 days.

When you’re ready to eat them, just place the pies on a baking sheet and put in a 350F oven for about 15-20 minutes or until heated through.

About the Ingredients for Beef and Stout Hand Pies

Beef – You can absolute use steak diced up here instead of the ground beef. Use lean ground or medium ground beef.

Onion – Yellow or white onion.

Potatoes – I like to use yellow potatoes for this dish.

Peas – I use frozen sweet peas. If you like canned, you could use that instead, or fresh peas if you have any.

Stout – I used Guinness out of personal preference but you can swap in your favourite stout.

Seasoning – Dried thyme, worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper provide plenty of rich flavour to the filling.

Pastry – You can use pre-made pastry shells or your own homemade pastry.

Milk – The milk wash encourages browning much like an egg wash, without giving the pastry a yellow shine. You can do an egg wash if you prefer that.

FAQs

Why is it no longer called crack pie? ›

Name change

Some food writers and others have criticized naming foods including Crack Pie after addictive substances as insensitive and offensive. In May 2019, Devra First of the Boston Globe criticized the name in a column for making light of addiction by alluding to the addictiveness of crack cocaine.

What does Guinness do to meat? ›

Guinness Stout or Extra Stout produces a dark, rich, flavorful sauce for your marinade that is also an effective meat tenderizer. Use this recipe for any steak, but we like the Rib-Eye, especially if this cut is on sale. If you are cooking for two, choose a nice big thick steak that you can slice and share.

How to stop a soggy bottom on a meat pie? ›

Blind-bake your base before adding a filling to help to firm the base and avoid liquid being absorbed into it. Prick the base with a fork to help steam escape, cover with foil or parchment, and weigh it down with ceramic baking beans, uncooked rice or white sugar.

Which is the best steak for pies? ›

The best cuts for a slow-cooked steak pie are chuck or silverside, or any braising beef you can get from your local supermarket will do just fine. You don't need to use expensive cuts of meat for this steak pie.

How to make a steak pie without a soggy bottom? ›

A metal pie pan placed on a preheated surface will set the bottom crust quickest; once cooked, the liquids from the filling above won't soak in, and as a result: no soggy bottom. (Using metal is crucial: Glass or ceramic pans don't transfer heat as efficiently, so they can be accomplices to a sad, soggy bottom.)

What is Guinness made out of? ›

Guinness is created using four key ingredients – roasted barley, malted barley, hops, yeast and water making Guinness dairy-free.

What does beef and Guinness stew taste like? ›

This Guinness beef stew is a very simple dish, but at the same time, it has a deep, complex, rich flavor. The maltiness of dark beer really does amazing things for the gravy. I served this in a nice ring of green onion-mashed potatoes. I hope you give this a try, whether for Saint Patrick's Day or any time of the year.

What meat goes with Guinness? ›

Meat in Guinness Stew – beef OR lamb

Traditionally, Guinness Stew is made with lamb. But in many parts of the world including here in Australia and North America, Guinness Stew is more commonly made with beef. I hope the Irish aren't offended! 🙂 I've made it with lamb and to be honest, I do prefer it with beef.

Does Guinness have beef in it? ›

Guinness, in common with some other beers, does actually involve a meat product in the brewing process, specifically the swim bladders of fish. This substance is not nominally retained in the final beverage.
