What qualifies you to be a blue star mother? ›

A mother or stepmother who has a son or daughter who is serving or has been honorably discharged from the Armed Forces of the United States is eligible to join as a Blue Star Mother. Member dues for Blue Star Mothers are $30 per year, to be submitted with the membership application.

The military represents all aspects of America, as does our group. Our mission is to support through service. Members and their sons and daughters who serve or have served honorably in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. Causes that will benefit military personnel.

The name came from the custom of families of servicemen hanging a banner called a Service Flag in a window of their homes. The Service Flag had a star for each family member in the military. Living servicemen were represented by a Blue Star and those who had lost their lives were represented by a Gold Star.

The Blue Star Service Banner was designed and patented in 1917 by World War I Army Capt. Robert L. Queisser of the 5th Ohio Infantry. Queisser's two sons served on the front line. His banner quickly became the unofficial symbol for parents with a child in active military service.

A Blue Star Family consists of the immediate family member(s) of a service member during a time of conflict.

Based on the star symbols used on the Service Flag, the term "Blue Star" has come into use in the United States as a reference to having a family member on active military service, while the term "Gold Star" has come to refer to the loss of a family member in military service.

How to Join. In order to join Blue Star Mothers of America, you must be the mother of an active-duty or discharged military personnel or have been the step-mother of this child(ren) before they were thirteen years of age. Membership dues are $30 a year. There is no charge to become an associate member.

The term Gold Star Mother refers to any mother who has lost a child in the service of our country. An American Gold Star Mother is a Gold Star Mother who has joined the American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. organization (AGSM). AGSM is a private organization and can set its own membership rules.
