Kimetsu no Yaiba is about a boy called Tanjiro, who sets out to become a demon slayer. Tanjiro lived in the mountains and needed to collect firewood to heat their home and cook food.

One such day he had stepped out to collect firewood, and he had returned to his house to find his family slaughtered by demons and his injured sister Nezuko, slowly turning into a demon. Hence, the story revolves around Tanjiro, training to become a demon slayer to avenge his mother and simultaneously find a cure for his sister.

It is such a magical anime, quite in tune with the fantasy genre – it will make you want to live in the anime itself. Just as a magical character, Shirayuki has apple-red hair, and because of this, she gets noticed by the prince of Tanbarun, who tries to make her his concubine forcefully.

Not wanting to give up on her freedom and love for medicine, she cut off a reasonable portion of her hair and ran away; later on, be rescued by Zen Wistalia – the prince of a neighboring country and his two aides. Shirayuki was indebted to the three of them, and in hopes of paying them back, she began her career as the court herbalist in Clarines – Zen’s country.

The two countries came to a middle ground, and a large wall was made in the middle of London, dividing Albion into two nations – the Commonwealth and the Kingdom.

Years later, the Commonwealth devised a plan to replace the Kingdom’s Princess Charlotte with Ange, a girl who looks strikingly similar to her, to have an agent highly placed within the royal family. However, the plot twists when the princess wants to work for the Commonwealth if Ange and her friends help her to become the Queen of the Kingdom.

Hence, the story continues with Charlotte working as a spy and studying at the reputed Queen’s Mayfair School with Ange and her friends.

Moving a little away from our dark fantasy, supernatural anime, we stumble upon a coming-of-age fantasy anime that we seemed fit to fall into our list of anime similar to The Tale of Outcasts.

After four years, the great war finally ends in the fictional continent of Telesis, the closure of which is the division of the continent into North and South. This also began the welcoming of a newer generation of people.

Violet Evergarden, an ex-soldier previously known as ‘the weapon’ on the battlefield, has begun her new life at CH Postal Services. She is incredibly moved by “Auto Memories Dolls,” which can convert people’s thoughts to words.

As Violet begins her journey here, she gets to experience various peoples’ differing emotions and forms of love. There were words of people she had heard on the battlefield that she couldn’t forget to date – whose meaning she was ultimately searching for.

Tsubasa Chronicle (IMDb: 7.3/10)

Another slightly older anime, the Tsubasa Chronicles, was aired in 2005 and had a similar animation to Cardcaptor Sakura. This anime also revolves around the genres of fantasy, romance, and action, which makes Tsubasa Chronicle similar to the Tale of Outcasts.

While exploring the enigmatic ruins in Clow Country, Syaoran comes across his childhood companion Princess Sakura, who suddenly sprouts wings that scatter into numerous feathers. Along with the feathers, Sakura’s memories also disappear into different dimensions.

In a desperate bid to help his friend regain her memories and save her life, Syaoran embarks on a quest to travel through various worlds and collect the scattered feathers.

Assisting him on this mission is Kurogane, a ninja from the country of Japan who wants to return home, the magician Fay, who wishes to wander between worlds indefinitely, and Mokona, a creature resembling a white meat bun.

A white, enigmatic being without self-awareness, emotions, or identity is mysteriously sent to Earth from the infinite cosmos. However, it can assume the shape and appearance of those with a strong drive. It initially appears as an orb and later takes the form of a stone.

It inherits the moss as the snow falls and the temperature falls. When a wounded wolf comes by and collapses to its death, It transforms into an animal. Eventually, It gains awareness and travels across the deserted tundra, where It encounters a Yupik boy with snow-white hair.

The deserted town where the boy resided was abandoned by adults searching for a paradise beyond the white tundra. However, the boy is now critically ill. When he eventually dies, the Immortal being takes on the boy’s form and starts on an endless journey to explore new places, people, and experiences.

After dying multiple times, the Immortal is discovered in a swamp by March, a lively girl who wants to be a caring mother. She calls him Fushi, meaning “Immortal,” as he cannot die. She befriends him and teaches him to behave less like a wild animal.

Nevertheless, Hayase, a warrior maiden, becomes his enemy and wants him for herself, even through her descendants, who are also her reincarnations.

The story of Gintama is set in the fictional alternative historical period of the Edo kingdom, where the human race is under attack by aliens called Amanto – sky people, and subsequently, they take control of the nation, and the once powerful Shogutane becomes a puppet government – and they pass a law where one is not allowed to carry swords in public.

With this story in the background, the main character, Gintoki Sataka, is a bold and carefree character with shiny gray hair who always carries around a sword and maintains his posture as a samurai, even though there is a ban on both. Gintoki helps people doing odd small jobs, often unexpected by others, while being the founder of Yoruzuya.

The Yorozuya team, consisting of Shinpachi Shimura, a glasses-wearing boy who is learning the art of being a samurai; Kagura, a girl with a tomboyish personality, possessing extraordinary physical strength and an insatiable hunger; and Sadaharu, their enormous pet dog that enjoys biting off people’s heads, face various challenges in the constantly evolving world of Edo, ranging from confrontations with local gangs to interactions with extraterrestrial rulers.

In the series, all the stories have multiple plots that are not connected but intersect and overlap as the events become more chaotic. Baccano centers around thugs, mafia, alchemists, thieves, Mafiosi, and Camorristi. A slightly puzzling and perplexing storyline that gets you confused but all the more engrossed in the anime. And for this stunning quality, Baccano gets an 8.2!

The world created in these stories is inspired by pulp fiction. It includes immortal alchemists, speakeasies run by the mafia, and other elements that make it seem straight out of a movie.

Mushi-shi Zoku Shou (IMDb: 8.8/10)

“Mushi” are the simplest forms of life on Earth, existing solely for their existence and without any moral implications. They can take on various forms, including imitating natural phenomena like plants and diseases. However, these entities are difficult to define as their existence is largely unknown to most humans.

Ginko relentlessly follows rumors and occurrences that may be linked to Mushi in hopes of uncovering the meaning of life.

Reverse London is a part of Soul Society located in the west and inhabited by Dragons, and it is kept hidden from the human population of London. It is a mirror image of the city of Front London, where dragons can be seen with the naked eye, unlike how people in London think of the existence of dragons to be myths.

The had not been any fatal dragon attacks for decades, but the appearance of a dark dragon created massive havoc in the city. It is up to the witches they save the city from the hands of this Dark Dragon and a problematic ex-bandmate of Ninnies.

Natsume’s Book of Friends (IMDb: 8.1/10)

One of my favorite anime, with a good plot and animation, is rated an 8.1, after all! Natsume Takashi possesses a unique gift of being able to see spirits – which he has kept hidden for a long time, yet he doesn’t know how to deal with them. However, when he inherits a peculiar book once owned by his late grandmother, Reiko, he finally learns why these spirits are drawn to him.

The book contains a list of the spirits’ names, establishing a binding agreement between the book’s owner and the spirits. Natsume now sets out to release the spirits from their contracts by returning their names with the assistance of a Chinese-lucky-cat-looking spirit. The anime shows his time trying to free the spirits from the contract and restore their freedom.

Fortunately, he stumbles upon an ancient summoning book that provides instructions on summoning a demon.

Following these instructions, he successfully summons a powerful demon named Vermeil, who was sealed previously. Vermeil becomes Alto’s familiar but occasionally requires magical energy, which she obtains through deep kisses from Alto. Although a slightly rated anime, the plot makes it an interesting watch!

Yuzuki speaks in a gentle tone and finds herself in an alternate world called Shinga after a bright light comes out of her phone. In this world, clusters of supernatural beings, such as vampires and werewolves known as the Gekkazoku, coexist peacefully with humans. The balance between them was kept intact by Himemiko, a powerful woman who protected Shinga.

Unfortunately, Himemiko vanished mysteriously, causing chaos in the world. Yuzuki is determined to locate her to return home, but the ongoing conflicts between the warlords make her search difficult.

Seton Academy is a unique educational institution that boasts a predominance of animal students over humans due to a significant decline in the human population. In this school, Jin Mazama is the sole male human in his class and harbors a deep-seated hatred toward animals.

It is a slightly different anime than the supernatural, dark fantasy trope that most anime followed. Still, the Shounen, anthropomorphic, and romance themes made it slightly similar to the Tale of Outcasts.

However, he finds himself smitten with Hitomi Hino, the only human female in the school. Despite his reluctance, Jin becomes embroiled with different creatures when he joins the “pack” of Ranka Ookami, the lone member of her wolf pack.

To help him regain his abilities, the headmaster of the magic school, Albus (yes, not Dumbledore), sends him to the southern region of the continent, where there is still rampant discrimination against those who practice witchcraft and sorcery.

He then meets a silver-haired witch who promises him ‘special training,’ but that is not where it ends. He still didn’t know what the witch wanted from him, especially when she had the same eyes as him.

Together, they join and learn alongside the impulsive Black Star and his mindful weapon, Tsubaki. They also work with Death the Kid, the son of Shinigami, a dual wielder of twin pistols named Patty, and Liz, obsessed with being meticulous.
